Center for Discernment and Preparation
Thanks to the Lilly Center for Discernment and Preparation every student has a professional internship experience before graduating with a BA.
The Center was established on March 1, 2004 through a grant from the Lilly Foundation. Its focus is to provide students with career counseling, assessment, job shadowing and internship opportunities. However, the main focus of the Lilly grant is to try and reduce the number of our talented graduates who leave Indiana for employment in other states, commonly referred to as the "Brain Drain." Indiana and its companies have much to offer our young people, and the Lilly Center for Discernment and Preparation will make them aware of employment opportunities in our state.
While we work mainly with the Baccalaureate students, we also interact with first and second year students, as well as alumni, as resources permit.
Mr. Ball Leads Center for Discernment and Preparation
Chuck Ball works with students at all levels as a mentor and counselor to help develop plans for success after completing a Bachelor Degree at Holy Cross College. The Center helps each student complete a plan which they can follow throughout their Holy Cross experience and after graduation. Having a solid plan will help graduates find success in their career, graduate school, or service in religious, humanitarian, or the armed forces.
A former Vice President of Human Resources at two large banks and a medical manufacturing firm, Mr. Ball comes to Holy Cross after more than 25 years in helping companies find the right person for the job. He finds that helping young people find the right career for their lives is all the more rewarding. He works closely with students from their freshmen through senior years in order to establish suitable post-graduate placement. He will mentor the students one-on-one throughout their junior and senior year as they complete their internship requirements as well as work with the underclassmen in required class meetings and in various classes in cooperation with faculty.
Mr. Ball currently serves on a number of community boards including the United Way of St. Joseph County, Samaritan Counseling Center and Crime Stoppers. He has served on the advisory board of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin where he still teaches each summer. He is also past president of the Huffer Memorial Children's Center, past president of the East Central Indiana Human Resources Association, and is a former instructor in the colleges of business at Indiana University-South Bend, Ball State University and Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis. "My experience in banking, manufacturing, and healthcare as well as my business contacts from several boards and Chambers of Commerce though out the state of Indiana give me a wealth of contacts to help arrange internships for Holy Cross students." says Ball. "I have also spent much of my career as the hiring authority in diverse businesses, so I can help prepare students to stand out with their resumes and in personal interviews."
For students who are in the process of discerning their next step after college, Mr. Ball will counsel students and utilize the FOCUS assessment, an online evaluation and career compass tool that helps individuals identify the strengths and find a career path that meets their personal goals and capabilities.
