STEP THREE - Next you must e-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is done on the same web site, www.studentloans.gov , will also take approximately 30 minutes and must be completed in one session. This is the final step that will allow the scheduled disbursements of the student's loan(s).

Applying for Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan
The Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan program allows parents to borrow the difference between their student's cost of attendance and the financial assistance he or she is receiving. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9 percent and the loan carries a 4 percent origination fee that is deducted from the loan when it is disbursed.
Parent PLUS Loan payments may be deferred while the student is enrolled at least half-time or more. Borrowers should contact their servicer for details.
STEP ONE - To apply for the Parent PLUS Loan, the student's parent will fill out the PLUS Loan Request form and submit the completed form to the Office of Financial Aid. The Holy Cross College Office of Financial Aid will run the credit check to ascertain the borrower's eligibility for the PLUS loan. If the credit check is approved, the borrower will then proceed with the next step in the process.*
STEP TWO - Next you must e-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The PLUS MPN is done on the same web site, www.studentloans.gov , will also take approximately 30 minutes and must be completed in one session. This is the final step that will allow the scheduled disbursements of the student's loan(s).
- Go to www.studentloans.gov
- Click on "Sign In"
- Sign in using the information you provided on the FAFSA and your PIN number
- Click on "Complete Master Promissory Note" - you will need to provide the name, address and telephone number of two references who have known you for at least three years and have different addresses from each other
The Master Promissory Note information will be provided to Holy Cross College upon completion.
*In the even the credit check is not approved, the borrower/student has two options.
- The first option is for the borrower to secure an endorser to proceed with the PLUS loan. The borrower must contact the Office of Financial Aid to utilize the endorser option.
- Appeal the decision by contacting www.myedaccount.com
- The second option allows the student to elect to utilize the additional sum of $4,000/$5,000 unsubsidized loan funding depending upon his or her grade level. This option can be indicated on the original PLUS Loan application.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As with Stafford Student Loans, a Parent PLUS Loan will not be disbursed to your son or daughter's student account unless a parent successfully completes both steps outlined above.

Special Circumstance Appeal Form
Dependency Override Request
A student's dependency status for financial aid is determined by the responses to questions on Step 3 of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If the student cannot answer "yes" to any of those questions, they are considered dependent. An emancipated student who doesn't answer any of those questions with a "yes" is still considered dependent for financial aid purposes. If you have encountered an extreme situation in your life that you believe may qualify you to be independent, please use this form, complete it and submit it, along with all requested/required documentation for review in the Office of Financial Aid.
Dependence Override Request Form
By federal law, the following circumstances DO NOT warrant the approval of a student's dependency appeal.
- Parents refusal to provide information on the FAFSA application or for verification
- Parents do not claim student as a dependent for income tax purposes
- Parents are unwilling or unable to contribute to their student's education
- Student demonstrates self-sufficiency
- Student is reluctant to request the income information from his/her parents
- Student does not wish to communicate with his/her parents
It is the policy of the Holy Cross College Office of Financial Aid to evaluate each dependency override appeal regardless of approval of a dependency override at another institution.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
The completion of this form is required when filing a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal and must accompany the appeal.
