Apply for Residence

Apply for residence

Male student on a computerChoosing where and with whom you want to live is one of the most exciting moments during your journey to Holy Cross College. Be sure to read and become familiar with the information on the housing contract—and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have along the way.

All first- and second-year Saints are required to live on campus. Exemptions are available and outlined below. Students find the experience so formational that many choose to stay on campus for the entirety of their time here. In fact, 80 percent of Holy Cross students live on campus.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the campus community! Before you can be assigned on-campus housing, there are a few things you need to do:

  • Submit the $200 Housing Deposit
    • New first year and transfer students will submit the housing deposit via their Holy Cross Applicant Portal
    • Continuing students can submit the housing deposit via their Holy Cross Student Portal or by contacting the Office of Student Accounts
  • Complete the 2021-2022 Housing Contract
    • New first year and transfer students will complete the housing contract within their Holy Cross Applicant Portal
    • Continuing students can access the housing contract here
  • Register for classes for the upcoming semester

Housing exemptions

In accordance with our mission, Holy Cross College requires that all full-time, first-year and sophomore students live on campus, unless exempted from this requirement.

The following first-year and sophomore Holy Cross students may request an exemption from this requirement, provided they submit an exemption request no later than July 1 for those entering the fall semester and January 1 if entering in the spring semester:

  • Students who are living locally with their parents or legal guardians
  • Students who have earned 60 or more credit hours
  • Students who have earned 54 or more credit hours and have lived four semesters in on-campus housing
  • Students who are 21 years of age prior to the first day of classes
  • Married students
  • Documented Veterans

New first-year and transfer students who have indicated that they will not be living on campus will complete a housing exemption form on their Holy Cross Applicant Portal. Requests are subject to approval.

Continuing students can request an exemption by completing this form.

All first-year and sophomore students who are not approved for an exemption must apply for housing and will be charged full room and meal expenses. Some students may qualify for additional need-based financial aid if they were originally packaged as an off-campus student and the exemption request is denied.

Deadlines and housing lottery

New first year and transfer students are asked to submit the housing contract on or before July 1. Those who indicate roommate requests and/or hall preferences and meet the May 1 confirmation deadline, which requires paying a housing deposit, will be entered in a housing preference lottery. Housing requests will be honored based on lottery results and availability of preferred rooms. Those who submit the housing deposit after May 1 will have requests honored as space allows and after the housing lottery placement is complete.

Continuing students must pay the housing deposit and complete the housing contract on or before April 30 to participate in the room selection process. All contracts received after this date will be considered on a space-available basis.

Assignments

New first year and transfer students will be able to view room and roommate assignments via the Holy Cross Student Portal in mid-to-late July. Those who meet the confirmation and housing contract deadlines will be entered into the housing preference lottery where roommate and residence hall requests will be considered based on lottery results. Providing preferences on the housing contract does not guarantee roommate or hall requests.

Continuing students will participate in a room selection process each spring. Room selection for the 2021-2022 academic year will occur on the following schedule:

  • Rising seniors – TBD
  • Rising juniors – TBD
  • Rising sophomores – TBD

Dining

Enrollment in a meal plan for use at Siegfried Dining Hall is included with on-campus housing. Meal plans also include Basil Bucks, which serve as a flexible extension of the meal plan, and can be used for food and drink purchases at our Ave Brew Café (proudly serving Starbucks coffee) as well as other eateries at the University of Notre Dame. Upgrade to an any-campus meal plan and you can access Notre Dame’s dining halls as well. Learn more about campus dining here.
