Saint Andrep>In the Consistory Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace at 11 a.m. on Friday, February19, a gathering of Cardinals was held to decide on the canonization of Blessed Brother Andre Bessette, CSC and five others. Pope Benedict made the announcement in Latin that Br. Andre was approved for sainthood and was officially canonized in a ceremony held October 17 in the Vatican. Several Holy Cross College representatives were in attendance.
Andre, born Alfred Bessette, has already been recognized by the Catholic Church for his healing powers. In 1978 he was declared venerable and was beatified in 1982. As a young man Br. Andre was frail in health and uneducated. After taking vows, the only work he was suited for was as a doorman at the College Notre-Dame, in Cote-des-Neiges (Montreal). He served in this role for 39 years. During his time in this position, he became well acquainted with all the students and visitors to the college. He developed a reputation as a humble man of God who possessed such strong faith that miraculous healings were attributed to him.
Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, Indiana (sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross) rejoices at the announcement of his canonization. Br. Richard Gilman, PhD, CSC, President of Holy Cross College, said, "It has been a long process that we have been following closely. We are excited to acknowledge and pray to our first Holy Cross saint!"
