Holy Cross Welcomes Veteran A.D. and Basketball Coach
When American author James Agee said, "You can never go home again," he didn't count on Bob Schermerhorn. Bob has decided to return home to South Bend as a head basketball coach and athletic director for Holy Cross College after more than 40 years coaching in Southern California, Utah and Arizona. "For me it is a dream come true to coach in the town I grew up amongst family and old friends," said Schermerhorn. "The Christian values and emphasis on academics here at Holy Cross makes it easier for me to go beyond just teaching X's and O's, to teach life lessons that help my players develop as young men."
A graduate of South Bend Central High School, Bob left town after graduation in the 60's to become a Marine and serve his country in the Vietnam War. When he returned stateside he settled in Southern California where he earned his Associates Degree at Orange Coast College and acted as assistant basketball coach. Since then he completed a Bachelors degree at Long Beach State and a Masters degree at Pepperdine University.
Coach "Horn" has been a winner at every level, coaching basketball from high school to NCAA Division I, including a term as head coach at Arizona State University. During his tenure, the Sun Devils upset both UCLA and the University of Oregon. Returning to Southern California, Schermerhorn coached Riverside Community College to nine consecutive playoff appearances. He was selected State Coach of the Year in 1996 and Orange Empire Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. He has since coached at Fullerton College and Santa Ana College where he was also Associate Dean of Exercise Science. In 2003, Coach "Horn" was enshrined in the California Community College Basketball Hall of Fame. His .646 lifetime winning percentage places him in the upper echelon of the college coaching ranks.
"We are extremely excited to gain someone with the great experience and winning history of Bob Schermerhorn, to help us take our nascent athletic program to the next level," said Tina Holland, Holy Cross College Executive Vice President. "Bob has the kind of character, motivational ability, and knowledge to help us develop an outstanding team, and much more importantly, encourage outstanding college graduates."
