Holy Cross College Inaugurates Brother John R. Paige, C.S.C.

Brother John Rhodes Paige, C.S.C. was installed as the 4th president of Holy Cross College in a public ceremony held Friday, September 23.  The investiture represented the highlight of several planned inaugural events.  The Holy Cross community, friends, and guests attended receptions, an academic honors induction, and a symposium celebrating the 170th anniversary of the Brothers of Holy Cross in the United States.

Friday's inaugural events began with a special Mass being held at in the St. Joseph Chapel on the campus of Holy Cross.  The Most Reverend Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades presided.

Over 500 guests, including presidents and representatives of 26 college and universities, attended the installation ceremony, held in the College's Pfeil Center.  Dr. Tina S. Holland, Executive Vice President, presided over the investiture.  Holy Cross junior, Ethan Tanis provided remarks on behalf of the student body, followed by alumnus, Craig Horvath's ('85) heartfelt comments given as representative of Holy Cross College alumni.  Chairman of the Board, Richard Rice, along with President Emeritus, Br. Richard Gilman, C.S.C., bestowed upon Br. John Paige the newly minted Holy Cross College presidential medallion, before declaring Br. Paige as the fourth President of Holy Cross College and officially presenting him to delegates, the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, students, and guests.

Following the installation ceremony, the public had the opportunity to meet President Brother John Paige at a reception on the Pfeil Center grounds.

Immediately prior to coming to Holy Cross College, Brother John served six years as the Vicar and First General Assistant of the Congregation of Holy Cross at the Congregation's General Administration in Rome, Italy.  Brother Paige is a 1968 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in physics.  He earned his M.A.L.S. degree in mathematics from Wesleyan University in 1976, an M.A. degree in applied theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkley, California in 1983, and a Ph.D. in education policy and leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1998.  Brother John Paige has a long, distinguished career in education as a teacher, coach, athletic director, academic dean, principal, board member, president/CEO, and college professor.  He was elected Holy Cross fourth president by a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees, and took office January 1, 2011, following retirement of Brother Richard Gilman, C.S.C. (1992 - 2010).

Since he began serving as Holy Cross president, Brother John has kept a busy schedule that has included meeting alumni and students across the United States, connecting with community businesses, organizations, and leaders, such as St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, for relationship building, playing host to the presidents of area Independent Colleges of Indiana member institutions, and providing remarks at various speaking engagements throughout the area.
