Eighth-Graders to Visit Holy Cross College

There will be some young faces in the Holy Cross College hallways Wednesday, February 7. It’s the annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day! Sponsored by Healthy Community Initiatives, the event gives young people the opportunity to explore fields they might want to study or work in one day.

More than 80 eighth-grade students from the South Bend Public School system were selected by their teachers to spend a day job shadowing. It’s a chance to see the inner-workings of area businesses, organizations and institutions.

“Most of these kids pick a field, and they really don’t know what happens there,” says Roz Summerlin, youth development director for Healthy Community Initiatives. “This gives them some firsthand experience as far as, ‘Is this what I really want to do?”

Two of the students will be shadowing at Holy Cross College.

“Students will be able to sit in on a class to see firsthand what it will be like in college. They also have a complete campus tour and are able to ask questions of counselors in admissions and financial aid. At the end of the morning, the students are escorted to the Rotary luncheon at Century Center” says Pat Adams, director of continuing education at Holy Cross College and Rotarian.

The event is also sponsored in part by the South Bend Rotary Club, the 21st Century Scholars Program and the South Bend Community School Corporation.
