Sister Amata Miller, IHM, Ph.D. to Deliver 2007 Commencement Address

Sister Amata is a member of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Her current ministry is at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sister Amata serves as professor of economics and director of the Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity.

During commencement, Sister Amata will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Holy Cross College 2007 commencement will be held May 12th at 2:00 p.m. in the College’s St. Joseph Chapel. A reception will follow in the Hardesty Plaza, weather permitting.

Holy Cross College is honored to have Sister Amata participate in this year’s commencement activities. She has been speaking, writing and teaching on economic justice issues around the nation for many years. Sister Amata began her ministry as an elementary school teacher for the archdiocese of Detroit and has continued a lifetime of service through education. She has taught economics at her alma mater, Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, as well as St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas; she has also served on each institution’s board of trustees.

Sister Amata has used her economics education in other ways as well. She was the chief financial officer of her religious congregation and later for Marygrove College. She also served as education coordinator and economic analyst for NETWORK: A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby.

A Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, the Groundwork for a Just World Discipleship Award, and the Archbishop John R. Roach Social Justice Award are among the honors and awards Sister Amata has received. Mercy Housing, Inc., South Shore Bank, Partners for the Common Good Loan Fund, Catholic Health Initiatives and Catholic Health Audit Network are among the many committees and boards on which she has served. She will be one of the presenters for Justice Craft, a seminar being offered by the Holy Cross International Justice Office of the Sisters of Holy Cross, June 3-10, 2007 at Saint Mary’s College.

Sister Amata holds a B.A. from Marygrove College, an M.A. from St. Louis University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. This will be her third honorary doctorate degree.
