INTERGENERATIONAL COURSES

These courses will be attended by community members, professionals, and traditional college students. 

Adults 65+ fee for either course is only $49!! 

Professional fee to audit is $99.  CEU's and/or Gerontology Certificate are also available for $300 per course.  Professionals can receive CEU's without going for the certificate.  The certificate is 6 courses - all offered one night a week.  To receive 3 credits  for the class - contact Pat Adams for the information and cost.

Spirituality and Aging

This course will examine the significance of spirituality in people's lives with emphasis on integration in the later years of life. Reflection will include one's own spiritual journey. We will explore and examine aging in the context of diversity of faiths and cultures. Explorations are based on the demographic picture of ageing and faiths. The following questions will be explored in the course:

  • What are the spiritual needs of people as they age?
  • Is there any evidence that prayer changes things?
  • How is spirituality related to physical and mental health?
  • Does spirituality matter when people know they are dying?
  • Will attention to spirituality aggravate or alleviate the losses--of friends, family, health, youth--that so often occur during old age?

Class is offered on Wednesdays, August 24-December 7 from 4:00-6:45 pm

Instructor:  Sister Linda Kors, CSC, B.S. in Occupational Therapy from Indiana University.  M.A. in Religious Studies from Mundelein College, Coursework from the U.S.C. Davis School of Gerontology.   Has worked in various positions in programs with elders and has assisted persons 55 years of age and older connect with appropriate resources in the community.

Aging in Communities

The course examines the possibilities and challenges a community faces to encourage and extend resources to people who are aging.  All dimensions of "aging in place" will be explored:  social, familial, educational, political, physiological, and occupational. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating successful "aging in place" solutions that various communities have found and are implementing.

Class is offered on Thursdays from 4:00-6:45 pm beginning August 25 -December 8 from 4-6:45 pm.

Instructor:  Barbara Finley, MDiv; MSW.  MDiv is from University of Notre Dame and her MSW is from Western George Williams College.  She has worked for Madison Center and now Memorial Beckworth since 1993.  She works exclusively with older adults.

Once a month Nonfiction Book Club

Moderator: John Chapleau

Locations:  Barnes and Noble, 2nd Friday each month at 10:15 to Noon at the Café ongoing.

                Andre Place, 4th Monday each month at 3:30 to 5 in the 1st floor Club activities room beginning September 26.

Club meets year round.  We like to include in our reading list books on local and world history, politics, economics, business culture, social justice and popular science. Hands-On Dinner Class

Instructor and Host: Br. Henry Skitzki, C.S.C.

Location: Riverside Place in Holy Cross Village

Time: Thursdays 5:30 - 8:30 beginning September 15-October 20.

Class will consist of hands-on preparation of six dinners, followed by sit-down dining by candlelight and savoring a fine wine. The instructor will purchase all the food and place it on various stations. The students will be broken into small groups and, under the supervision of Brother Henry, prepare the meal. Many culinary secrets and new ingredients will be introduced, featuring lands near and far. Raw food cost will be $80, collected at the first class. This allows for fine dining for 7 to 9 people for under $14.00/person.

ENRICHMENT COURSES

Beginning and Intermediate Computers

Learn the basics of working with your computer and how to create, revise, format, edit, spell check, save, print, and much more.  Small class size and individual assistance from college lab students make an enjoyable learning environment.  We will also introduce you to the intriguing world of the Internet/email.  This class is for beginners or people who have not used the computer consistently.  Our class is small, so you can receive individual attention.

SAT Math Review Class

Meets 4 Thursdays, April 12 - May 3

Time: 5-7 pm  

Room 200 of Vincent Hall at Holy Cross College. 

Fee is $79 + Book ($25)   Book will cover both Math and English SAT review classes and is purchased at our bookstore before the first SAT class. 

English SAT Review Class

Meets 3 Mondays, April 16 - 30

Time:  5-8 PM   

Room 200 of Vincent Hall at Holy Cross College

Fee is $79 + Book (same book that is used for Math SAT)    Buy it at our bookstore just before first SAT class.

Enjoy learning from the comfort of your own home.  Go to www.ed2go.com/holycross to enroll in the class of your choice - over 100 to choose from! You will need internet access and email.  Courses are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive.  All courses run for 6 weeks and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, and supplemental links.  Each class begins on a Wednesday and the first lesson is available after 6 pm on the first scheduled day of class.  Select your class, attend the orientation, enroll, and pay right on-line.  The charge Fee is listed on the web site.
