2008 Commencement Ceremony

The 41st commencement exercises of Holy Cross College will be held:

Guest Speaker
Guest commencement speaker will be former governor of Indiana and current part-owner of the South Bend Silver Hawks, Mr. Joe Kernan. Mr. Kernan has also served the City of South Bend and the State of Indiana as South Bend City Controller, Mayor of South Bend, and Lieutenant Governor of Indiana.
Joe received his Bachelor of Arts in Government from the University of Notre Dame, where he also played catcher for the Notre Dame baseball team . Joe was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and served as a Flight Officer aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He was shot down over Vietnam and held as a POW for nearly 11 months. He received two Purple Hearts and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Honorary Degree Recipient
During commencement the college will honor the Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Hugh Cleary, C.S.C. Father Cleary will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane letters in honoris causa and will be given recognition for his years of service to the Church and Congregation as a Priest of Holy Cross.
Reverend Cleary was ordained in 1973 and has served as Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross since 1998 . Having earned his bachelor’s degree in English at Stonehill College, he went on to earn three master’s degrees: in theology at Notre Dame, in counseling psychology at Loyola University in Chicago, and in formative spirituality at Duquesne University where he also earned his doctorate in the same discipline.

Deadline to Commit
The deadline for committing to commencement participation and ordering caps and gowns is Friday, March 21.
