EDUC 200 (3)
Transformative Teaching for a Diverse Society
This course explores teaching as a vocation. Through lecture, readings, written assignments, and observations, students examine the personality traits and the functional skills necessary for success in elementary and secondary education classrooms. This course provides a structured approach to investigating one’s interest in and suitability for a career in education.

Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom
PRERQUISTE: EDUC 200
The development of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential for K-6 teachers: planning, teaching strategies, evaluation, reflection, professional growth. A special emphasis will be placed on creating an effective learning community. A field experience of 30 hours is required and will take place Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Diverse Learners
PREREQUISITE: EDUC 200
An introduction to special education and special education law. Topics covered with include all areas of exceptionally, as well as a description of educational implications for elementary school students with educational disabilities. A special emphasis on teaching ELL students and student at-risk for learning disabilities due to poverty.

Children’s Literature
Drawing on children’s reading interest and needs as a basis for evaluation, this course will focus on the selection and role of children’s literature in the elementary and middle school curriculum.

K-6 Field Experience
PREREQUISITE: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
This course will examine tools and processes used to assess and evaluate Elementary Student performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on contemporary evaluation methods currently used in local elementary schools. Students will participate in a field experience in conjunction with this course.

Reading and Language Arts Methods I: K-6
PREREQUISITE: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
This course will introduce students to the research, theory and practice of Language and Literacy development in K 6 students. The course examines strategies to develop children’s phonemic, phonological, and morphemic awareness, and other decoding and encoding skills as well as topics related to comprehension and genre. The application of differentiated instruction and E L L strategies within the language arts curriculum will be addressed. This course will include a field placement in a local elementary school.

Science and Health Methods I: K-6
PREREQUISITE: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
This course examines historic and contemporary methods and practice of teaching K-6 Science and Health. Emphasis will be placed on teaching in a diverse setting, utilizing standards, and experiential learning. Students will apply theoretical learning through participation in a field experience accompanying this course.

Assessment and Evaluation of Children with Differences
PREREQUISITE: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
This course will examine tools and processes used to assess and evaluate student performance and learning. Particular emphasis will be placed on contemporary evaluation and remediation methods used in elementary schools, locally and nationally. Students will participate in a field experience in conjunction with this course.
