The Walls Came Tumbling Down
Out with the old and in with the new at Holy Cross College
While it has been condemned since April of 2006, Holy Cross College officially demolished its existing athletic facility on July 23rd. It is common knowledge that the college has broken ground on the new Pfeil Recreation Center. This facility will surpass the old athletic center tenfold.
Constructed in the summer of 1965, this building was intended to store incoming supplies. However, it was outfitted as a basketball facility, and before long the brothers were using it for recreational purposes more than storage. It was enjoyed by students and faculty alike for the next forty years.
For the past year, this facility has been used by Panzica Construction, the company building the independent living apartments in the Holy Cross Village. It has been used to house their supplies, but the time finally came to knock it down.
The demolition of the old athletic facility allows Holy Cross to be able to say ‘out with the old and in with the new’. Knocking down this facility ends an era at Holy Cross, an era of limited athletic opportunities. The construction of the Pfeil Recreation Center is emblematic of a new age at Holy Cross, where the possibilities, athletic and academic alike, are endless.
