Holy Cross College Saints Host First Home Soccer Game in NAIA Intercollegiate Athletics
Featuring Standout Local Players from South Bend, Elkhart, and Buchanan as well as International Recruits from England, Guatemala and Honduras, The Holy Cross Saints Are Poised for an Outstanding Inaugural Season
NOTRE DAME, IN (August 23, 2007) — The Holy Cross College athletic program continues to grow with its first home soccer match against Siena Heights University of Adrian, MI. Although the final outcome was Siena 2 and Holy Cross 1, it was a victory of sorts to be able to field our first competitive team in NAIA action.
“We feature a very strong group of freshman recruits that will be fun to watch over the next four years,” says new head coach Ryan Leniski. South Bend area soccer fans may be familiar with the Saints coach. He has been the head coach for the boy’s varsity team at Elkhart Central High School since 1999.
Several players from Elkhart area high schools have opted to continue their careers at Holy Cross College including: midfielders Oswaldo Garcia and Dante Lozada, midfield/defenders Alex Stevens and Bernardino Gallegos, midfield/forward Juan Rohrman, and defender Jose Rios.
The game was played on Holy Cross’s home pitch on the south end of campus (beyond the new athletic center construction site). Fans were thrilled to see the first soccer goal ever scored in a Saints uniform by #9 Matt Prawat a 6’1” forward from Oregon, Wisconsin.
Go Saints!
