PUBLIC LECTURE: “The Heart and Mind of Blessed Basil Moreau”

NOTRE DAME, IN (October 4, 2007) — In honor of the beatification of Father Basil Moreau, Holy Cross College will be sponsoring a lecture on his life. It will reflect on how during the Reign of Terror, the French Revolution, Fr. Moreau had the courage and drive to carry on the Catholic Faith.
The Church was one of the two most prominent institutions of French culture to be overthrown, the other being the monarchy. Many priests and bishops during this time were killed or exiled. Only those who gave up all loyalty to Rome and swore allegiance to the state were allowed to continue preaching. Fr. Moreau did not die at the hands of the Revolution, nor did he ever give up his loyalty to Rome. Instead, he founded the Congregation of Holy Cross and carried on the Catholic Faith until his death.
The lecture will be held on Wednesday, October 10th, at 7:00 PM in the Driscoll Auditorium (located in the Northeast corner of Driscoll Hall). Br. John Tryon will be the main speaker of the night. Br. John is an English professor as well as the director of the writing lab at Holy Cross College. Vice President Dr. Tina Holland and President Br. Richard Gilman will also be speaking briefly.
Br. John wants to remind his audience that although Fr. Moreau has been beatified, he was still a man. “This presentation is a plea to those who, in pious fervor, would transform Blessed Basil Moreau into an amorphous, angelic being: Don’t. Please. For in doing so, you deny the Church a much needed role model for the 21st Century.”
