Fourth Annual Run for Hope April 26th
Holy Cross College students, faculty, staff, and the South Bend community will join together for the fourth annual “Run for Hope” on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 9:15 am. Participants can either compete in a 5K run for $20, or participate in the 3K “Family Fun Walk” for $10. Both events cost $10 for students from Holy Cross College, Saint Mary’s College and the University of Notre Dame. The cost includes the race and a “Run for Hope” tee-shirt.
The opening ceremony will feature students Matt Rochette and Kyle Murphy presenting information on the conflict in Darfur, as well as entertainment from the Saint Mary’s College A Cappella Choir. The 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk follows at 9:45 a.m. Both courses will wind around the Holy Cross College campus and surrounding areas.
The proceeds from this year’s event will go to Holy Cross College’s chapter of the Africa Faith and Justice Network (AFJN), which is a Catholic organization aimed at helping African citizens, particularly those involved in the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan. AFJN is a young organization at Holy Cross College, and the co-presidents, Ellen Ludwig ‘08 and Tara Morin ‘08, are eager to help the people of Darfur, a region where hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced.
“It is our goal to help alleviate some of the suffering that our brothers and sisters in Darfur are going through. We are going to use the funds from this Run For Hope and send it to a Church in Nyala, a city in Darfur. Which is near a large internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. From there the pastor will use the funds to aid the people in the nearby camp,” says Ellen.
