Betzabe Madrigal

Born in Mexico and moving to the United States at age 7, Betzabe Madrigal ’21 is from the southside of Chicago and majored in elementary education with a minor in English.

“I took an education class my sophomore year and was placed in a classroom in the neighborhood. I saw how passionate the teachers I was placed with were, and I wanted to take part in creating a safe place for students like the teachers I was fortunate to have been placed with,” said Madrigal about her reason for going into education.

Why Holy Cross College

“I would say how small the College is. I always liked having classes where there were not too many students and having the teacher actually involved in whatever I needed,” noted Madrigal.

Impactful moment

“There are many memorable moments that have impacted my life and have made me who I am today. Yet the one that has stuck with me has been when I was student teaching at Holy Family. Since I was placed at a Catholic school, I was given the opportunity to teach religion classes. I had many students question where God came from and who was God – I realized I was lacking faith. They, in a way, pushed me to begin to practice my faith once again. I knew I wanted to instruct them in their faith, but how was I going to do that if I was not practicing my own. They helped me grow in patience and accept the concept of change,” said Madrigal.

Life after college

She plans to stay in the area and teach third grade at Holy Family grade school in South Bend.

“I am not sure how long I plan to stay in the area, but I tell myself that God will provide,” remarked Madrigal.
