Nayeli Natalia Belmares

A native of South Bend, Indiana, Nayeli Natalia Belmares ’23 is majoring in elementary education with a minor in psychology.

“I have always liked being surrounded by children,” notes Belmares on why she is pursuing education. “As well as having a passion for learning new concepts and understanding them. Once I learn something new, I like to share it with others to help them grow as an individual. Which then lead me to pick my major. As for my minor, it helps me better understand student’s behavior.”

Why Holy Cross College

“What brought me to Holy Cross were the relationships that students have with faculty and staff. In a small yet big community like Holy Cross, I was able to get to personally know everyone I surround myself with within this institution. As well as being able to come across great opportunities,” said Belmares.

Campus activities

“I am about to go into my second year of being involved with student government. The position I have is being a senator and this has allowed me to help the students at Holy Cross make their ideas become a reality,” notes Belmares. “I am also the vice president for Latinos Unidos. I first got involved with this club because it allowed me to get to meet more students on campus and I enjoyed the events that they would host.”

Impactful moment

“I took a course at Holy Cross that helped me become better at understanding students. Within this course, I quickly learned that every lesson plan is not going to work for every student. That we never really know with certainty how a student will react in certain situations. This caused me to get anxious at times and my professor went on to say, ‘You have to learn to be okay with the unknown.’ What my professor said to me not only helped me in the school setting but in my personal life. From that moment on I have been able to be more at ease when I do not know how things will turn out,” said Belmares.

Future plans

“I do intend to teach eventually. My plan right now is to go to graduate school after I graduate from Holy Cross with the intent to study either counseling or speech pathology,” notes Belmares.
