Brother Pierre-Evenn de Fremond, C.S.C.

Brother Pierre-Evenn de Fremond, C.S.C., ’23, wants to be an educator of the faith within the Congregation of Holy Cross. Traveling from Rennes, France, he is pursuing a major in theology at Holy Cross College.

Faith journey

His spiritual journey began with a year in the Novitiate. During this time, he participated in parish life while continuing his journey of discernment, learning the history of the Holy Cross congregation and the meaning of the vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience.

“My time at the Novitiate was based on silent mornings and communal activities in the afternoon, staying home four days a week. On Wednesdays, we would visit the vulnerable in the hospital, at an Alzheimer’s center, and the homeless center. On Sunday mornings, we had some parish ministry activities, and Saturday was a free day,” recalled de Fremond about his time in the program. Unfortunately, COVID restrictions halted his opportunity to leave the building in March.

At the end of the Novitiate year, he professed First Vows.

“During this event, I made my first big step to becoming a religious, so it was pretty much like being engaged with God and the Congregation in a way. This profession was at the end of the Novitiate, a year spent away from the world to discern peacefully and the beginning of my apostolic life as a religious. It was very exciting,” said de Fremond who noted that due to COVID, the church remained empty at the ceremony and families were unable to attend. “I was excited to go back to France and see my relatives after this amazing year.”

His next step will be taking his Final Profession and becoming a full member of the Congregation.

“I should take final vows in about three years. We usually have four years of temporary vows,” said de Fremond.

Future goals

“I want to teach catechism in schools. I would like to pursue philosophy because I would also like to teach this in high school once back in France,” noted de Fremond about his plans for the future. “I want to be an educator of the faith within the Congregation of Holy Cross.”
