Zachary Mundwiller

Zachary Mundwiller ’21, a biology major from Thousand Oaks, California, chose the field of biology because he plans to go into medicine after undergraduate school to be a physician assistant.

Why Holy Cross College

“I was drawn to Holy Cross because of its unique tri-campus model. I liked the way Saint Mary’s, the University of Notre Dame, and Holy Cross College were all so close together and how they shared different opportunities among the students,” said Mundwiller.

While on campus, he was a resident assistant in Basil Hall during his last two years of college.

“I got involved in this because I wanted to walk with young men through the joys and difficulties they experience in their first years in college,” noted Mundwiller. “I was also a part of Student Government as the junior and senior senator. Student government was important to me since freshman year because I wanted to be involved on campus and represent my classmates, making changes on campus happen.”

He led an active faith life on campus, serving as an altar server during Mass. Being a student worker in the library allowed him to enjoy his appreciation for the quiet of the library and walking among books. An interest in the ability to defend himself with just his hands, feet, and body led him to the University of Notre Dame Martial Arts Institute all four years of college.

Impactful experience

“The first Spes Unica retreat that I went on in the Fall semester of my Freshman year, November 2017, changed my life. Through an experience at adoration, I encountered the joy of Christ, and I realized that in all of my then 18 years of practicing Catholicism, I had only scratched its surface. That weekend retreat rekindled the fire within me, and it set me on the journey that I am still on today to know and love Christ deeper,” said Mundwiller.

Future holds endless possibilities

“I love languages, and I want to help people directly with my hands. So, my dream is to become bilingual in Spanish and use it when I practice medicine as a physician assistant. Hopefully, I will be able to travel the world as a physician assistant and learn multiple languages,” commented Mundwiller.
