Q&A WITH ADAM
The best thing about Holy Cross
The ability to develop personal and meaningful relationships with students that last beyond their graduation from Holy Cross. I’m often asked to write letters of recommendation, grab a meal when they’re back in town, or just connect on various social media outlets to keep in touch. These bonds were formed over coffee at Jazzman’s Café, cheering for the Saints in the Pfeil or on the road, and seeing each other around the local area. I love recommending area restaurants or activities for students during their downtime. These daily interactions can develop into lasting friendships, and I have many stories of how these friendships have inspired and helped me be a better admissions counselor, husband, and person.
What is your favorite city to visit during travel season as an admissions counselor:
Being a fan of live music, I can’t help but be taken in by the history, scenery, and vibe of San Francisco, California. Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge was definitely on my bucket list, but I had I no idea I’d get to do it a half a dozen times before I turned 30. I love to travel and have been very lucky to visit many great cities. Aside from San Fran some of my favorite places I’ve visited are Denver (CO), Austin (TX), and Chicago (IL). However, at the end of any trip I’ll always say that it’s good to be home.
Favorite local activities
In the area my wife enjoys exploring our area. On Saturday you can often find us at the area Farmer’s Market (open year round), then grabbing lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants or at Eddy Street Commons. Every month Downtown South Bend hosts a First Friday’s themed event and we enjoy visiting the many local shops (including the South Bend library sale where you can get great deals on DVDs, books, and CDs). Frequently you’ll find my family and I out taking in the local music scene in the area (you’ve got to hear The Rutabega and Moveable Types and see a show at “The Pool”). As you can probably gather I proudly wear a “I Heart South Bend” bracelet and I mean it. (I could go on about taking the South Shore train to Chicago or driving to the beaches of Lake Michigan…)
Favorite campus activities
Behind Pulte and South Hall there is an area that used to be railroad tracks to bring coal to the tri-campus colleges – it’s now a great walking path along with views of the river. Also, since I help run the college Instagram account I enjoy walking the campus with my dog Cosmo (who loves meeting the students) and seeing the beauty of campus from all angles. However, nothing beats cheering on the Saints in the Pfeil Center with the HC Pep Band and Basil. Go Saints!
