Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow Scholarship

Annextad Scholar Elizabeth Dickinson, '28, shares the impact of the program.

Holy Cross College is one of 75 schools offering the Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow Scholarship. New to campus in 2024, this renewable scholarship is awarded to two students each academic year. The Annexstad Family Foundation goes beyond providing scholarship funding for students, by creating additional resources and opportunities for students to grow and develop through the scholarship program.

The Leaders for Tomorrow National Scholarship program makes a significant investment in developing future leaders who have exhibited incredible potential. Holy Cross selects the recipients who demonstrate aspirations to one day create change and become leaders in their chosen field. To encourage this leadership development the Foundation provides all scholars opportunities for community building, professional development and financial wellness training, networking, scholar profiles/highlights, support from dedicated program managers, and access to individualized resources.

2025-26 Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow Scholars:
  • Elizabeth Dickinson, Class of ‘28
  • David Vela, Class of ‘28
  • Stephanie Alfaro Rodriguez, Class of ‘29
  • Christopher Schaub, Class of ‘29

Nicholas Spehar Memorial Scholarship

Christian Plether talks about how being Spehar Scholar has changed his life.

The Nicholas Spehar Memorial Scholarship was established through a spontaneous pledge by David Gundlach to honor the life and sacrifice of Nicholas Spehar, a Naval Special Warfare SEAL Team Five member killed in combat in 2011 and the brother of a former student at Holy Cross College. Funded through Gundlach’s estate gift to the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, and founded in 2012, the scholarship has delivered more than $1.2 million in aid to 95 students. Dozens of scholars on campus each year pursue degrees while carrying forward a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service.

The scholarship supports siblings, spouses, and children of those killed in the line of duty, as well as veterans and children of active or retired military members. Recipients often cite the award as a life changing source of stability that allows them to focus on their studies, remain enrolled at Holy Cross, and prepare for futures of service in their own communities.

We are grateful to our partners at the Community Foundation of Elkhart County for their enduring commitment to supporting Holy Cross students and faithfully carrying forward David Gundlach’s vision for this scholarship.

The 2025-2026 Nicholas Spehar Scholarship recipients gathered in the fall of 2025.
